Types of Electric Bikes

E-bike Classification System

The US government has a classification system for electric bikes as an emerging form of transportation. Those are Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3.

  1. Only pedal-assist is available on Class 1 e-bikes, which have a top speed of 20 mph and no throttle. When you pedal, the electric motor starts. E-bike riders in Class 1 are allowed to ride anywhere they like, just like any other bike.
  2. E-bikes in the Class 2 category have a throttle and can reach speeds of up to 20 mph. Operating Modes

There are three main forms of operation for electric bikes. There are three types: motorized, pedal-assist, and unpowered. Depending on the model, there are different combinations of these modes.

  1. Motor Powered. The bike is self-propelled by the engine, so you don’t have to peddle. Pedals may or may not be present on these electric motorcycles. While they’re extremely convenient, they’re only as good as the battery charge and become useless once it’s depleted.
  1. Pedal Assist is a feature that helps you keep your feet on the ground. Essentially, the motor only generates power while you are pedaling. When you pedal, a sensor on the pedal recognizes your movement and activates the motor to help you. This is less taxing on the body and allows you to go longer distances as long as your battery is charged.
  1. Unpowered bike. You’re pedaling the bike without any electric assistance or power, and you’re the only source of energy. 

Motor Power

You should check for power and torque while evaluating an electric bike’s performance. In a vehicle, watts is equivalent to horsepower. When compared to a lower-wattage motor, which requires more effort for the same performance, a bicycle with a high-wattage engine is better at climbing steep hills and produces less heat when riding over gentle inclines.

You’ll need an electric bike with plenty of torque if you want to get off the line quickly. When traveling over rough terrain, having greater torque makes it simpler to accelerate rapidly. Suspension systems are available on electric bikes for a more comfortable ride. Only a few electric bikes have front suspension, commonly known as the fork. Coil and air suspension are the two forms of suspension. In an urban setting, longer suspension travel can absorb hits, bumps, pebbles, and curbs. To give you an idea, for any terrain, a travel suspension of 90-150 mm is ideal.

Frame Material

Some more affordable e-bikes come fit with rim brakes that either come in U or V configuration. These are to decrease general costs, and are quite functional but for the $1500 price range, they are not as much of a common option, because there’s always better.
